  1. Richard A. Hurd, Jr says:

I recently came across this after referral by a friend. My wife grew up in the Dover Rockaway area, and by coincidence, I bear a tenuous relationship to the John Hurd who donated the land for Hurd Park. I have a detailed family history that covers those times, and it states that there is some dispute re: a Moses Hurd coming from Dover, NH. in 1722. .While he may be another distant branch of the Hurd family, the dates don’t fit for him being the father of Jacob born in 1798!!!, he could not have been my direct family line, because my ever so great Grandfather Josiah Hurd, Jr did not come to Dover from Connecticut until sometime before 1756. He had a son, Moses, born in 1771 who then had a son, Jacob, who was a tavern keeper in Dover, and his son is the John Ward Hurd who donated the land for the park. Moses had a brother, Daniel, born 1760, and he is my direct ancestor, so…I have a tenuous relationship to the donor of the park. I hope you enjoy your celebration.
